Romania: Consumption increased after 2 “anemic months”

Retail sales, the most important indicator of private consumption, increased by 2.9% (gross) in June 2020 compared to the same month last year.

The increase was supported by sales of food products (3.6%) and especially non-food products (8.8%), while the fuel market is still in recession (-8.8%).

This annual increase in private consumption in June shows a recovery after two months of decline caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy. Thus, Romanians’ confidence and willingness to consume returned in June after two “anemic” months, during which the Covid-19 pandemic left its mark on the economy as a whole./ibna
