Romania carries out big-scale operation against organized crime

Yesterday, the Romanian police forces carried out the largest operation to date against organized crime groups. The operation, in which investigations were carried out at about 400 addresses across the country, involved almost all the prosecutors of the competent directorate (DIICOT) and special police forces men.

The reportedly massive operation was organized following the ‘scenario’ formed after the return of many leading underworld organizations to Romania from Western European countries, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

About 400 people from 21 criminal organizations were called to the station for questioning; 98 people were detained and 19 people were arrested with pending execution orders and European arrest warrants. Large quantities of drugs, alcohol, gold, and 40 cars -8 luxury cars among them-, 12 properties and large sums of money were confiscated.

Today, 55 house searches are being conducted in the counties of Galați, Botoșani, Iași, Teleorman, Vrancea and Bucharest. /ibna
