According to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the number of tourists accommodated in Romanian tourist accommodation for the first nine months of 2019 amounted to about 2.1 million people and their expenditure exceeded 5.485 billion lei (EUR 1.15 billion), according to data compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
The main purpose of their stay in Romania was professional and business: attendance at conferences, seminars, courses, trade fairs – The expenditure of the 54.6% of tourists arriving in Romania during the above-mentioned period amounted to 57.7% of the total expenditure (EUR 660 million). Of the total business travel expenses, the largest share was spent on accommodation (49.7%), especially breakfast (91.9% of total accommodation).
Expenditure on restaurants and bars accounted for 18.1%, while expenditure on shopping accounted for 12.8%. Of the total spending on purchases, 45.6% were spent on food and drinks and 32.5% on gifts and souvenirs. Car rental costs account for 53.1% of total transportation costs, while access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos account for 37.2% of total recreational spending.
The second purpose of tourist stay in Romania is personal travel (45.4% of the total number of tourists), of which holiday travel (66.8%) stands out, with housing costs (49.2%), of which bedding had the largest share (79.8%). Expenditure on bars and restaurants accounts for 16.7% of total expenditure for personal purposes and expenditure on purchases accounts for 15.7% of total expenditure of tourists. Car rental expenses accounted for 55.9% of total transportation costs and spending on access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos accounted for 48.2% of total leisure spending. According to the INS, of the total number of tourists arriving in Romania, 47.3% organized their stay through travel agents and 33.7% organized their own accommodation. The rest of the stays were held with another organizer (clubs, etc.).
The main means of transport used by tourists to reach Romania was by plane (80% of the total number of tourists), while 11.0% came with their own car, followed by coaches and buses with 7.4%, other means (train, river, car rental, motorcycles etc.) 1.6%.
The number of tourists staying in private accommodation units (apartments and rooms to rent) during the period from 1 January to 30 September 2019 was 40,577, while their expenditure in Romania amounted to 39.1 million./ibna
