Some 5,000 refugees – which is a record high number – have arrived in the reception center in Kanjiza, near the Hungarian border, in the last 24 hours. On Wednesday, 3,300 refugees and migrants entered Hungary, according to the Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS). At the same time, every tenth person remains in the camp. Most of the refugees want to continue until they reach their destination in Austria and Germany.

The nights are getting colder, but there are enough blankets, RTS reports. UNHCR distributed blankets to Belgrade and will be transported to Kaniza “soon”.

There’s enough aid for the refugees and citizens should not deliver more, Serbian Red Cross head said earlier this week. However, reporters which have been with the refugees in the park at the Belgrade bus station said there’s a lack of tents, blankets and warm clothes. While waiting for the transportation to Kanjiza, some of the refugees in the park made a fire in order to warm themselves.

At this moment, the railway Horgos-Reske, at the border between Serbia and Hungary, is the only place where refugees can cross the frontier after the government in Budapest erected a fence in order to prevent their passing.

Hundreds of migrants are using the last few days remaining, to enter European Union territory, before September 15 when Hungary is going to strengthen control on the border. The frontier would be safeguarded by Hungarian military, while illegal crossings would be regarded as a criminal offense punishable by up to three years in prison.

Meanwhile, Hungary prepares to run military exercise near the border with Serbia. Sources from Budapest said that the objective of the exercise would be to “show that Hungary can protect its borders”. Hungarian officials underline that the maneuver is directed to “illegal migrants and human smugglers, not to our neighbors”.

If the Hungarian parliament passes the respective legislation, Budapest would deploy the army on the border with Serbia. This may be expected after September 20.
