Lesvos and especially the hotspot of Moria will visit Saturday, April 16, the Pope Francis, accompanied by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop of the Church of Greece Hieronymus.
The information was made known two days ago when it was announced Mr. Jerome during the Permanent Holy Synod, followed by the announcement of the Ecumenical Patriarch.
The Vatican formalized the imminent, and with strong symbolic elements, visit of the Pontiff in Lesvos, in a statement issued Thursday.
The Pontiff has repeatedly supported refugees, urging Europeans to accommodate families of immigrants.
His first trip since taking the helm of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013 was the island of Lampedusa, which had received hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
This is the first joint visit of the heads of the Orthodox and the Catholic Church, who will meet with refugees in Moria of Lesvos, in order to send a strong message of awareness in the international community regarding the refugee crisis.
