The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi participated in the annual conference on Western Balkans organized by “Friends of Europe” in Brussel.
During the panel on the relations between the Westerns Balkans and the European Union, President Thaçi declared that Kosovo and the region are on a political and historical crossroad.
President Thaçi stressed that the clear European perspective is key to guarantee long-term peace and stability in the region. He added that the new leadership of the European Union should demonstrate vision, courage and leadership, keeping the promises to the Western Balkan states and to demonstrate that it is a stable partner of the states of the region.
The postponement and delay of EU enlargement, according to President Thaçi, is in fact an invitation for a new upheaval in the Balkans.
“While the Strategy for Enlargement of the European Union with the Western Balkans created the belief that the EU is giving decisive impetus to the goal of Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to integrate into the EU, the events that followed disproved us all”, said President Thaçi.
Speaking about Kosovo’s European perspective, Thaçi argued that the visa liberalization for Kosovo should materialize as soon as possible, since Kosovo has met all the criteria and the citizens of Kosovo are being unfairly isolated.
President Thaçi also said that the agreement between Kosovo and Serbia must bring recognition for Kosovo and a clear perspective on the Euro-integration path.
Today president Thaçi, has travelled to Berlin, Germany, where he will participate at the conference organized by the “East West” Institute.
The conference is expected to be attended by senior state representatives of the United States of America, the European Union and the countries of the Western Balkans.
President Thaçi will be on a panel with former German Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger, former US Ambassador Frank Wisner, and former EU foreign policy representative, Baroness Catherine Ashton.
This panel will discuss about the process of the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia and the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries./ibna
