President of Albania, Ilir Meta has participated today in the holy mass held by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Florence, cardinal Giuseppe Betori in Saint Anthony church in Lac, to honor the Albanian cardinal, Ernest Simoni for the contribution that he has made for the Christian faith during the difficult years of the communist regime. This mass saw the participation of senior clerics and hundreds of catholic believers.
Meta awarded the Albanian cardinal, Ernest Simoni with the medal “Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu”.
“The testimony of the Christian life of our cardinal is the testimony of a courageous 35 year old man, who, on 24 December 1963, during the years of the harsh persecutions of the communist regime in Albania, dared to hold a mass in commemoration of the murdered president of the United States of America, John Kennedy. This act, which is a symbol of faith, peace, respect and freedom, received a very harsh punishment by the communist regime. Don Troshani was first given a death sentence and then he was sentenced to 25 years in prison”, Meta said during the ceremony which honoured the sacrifices and sufferings endured by cardinal Simoni in the name of faith. /ibna/
