Europe must defend the man, first and foremost the man in Greece from where the frontiers of Europe start, stressed the President of the Republic of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos, talking to an expatriates concentration in Geneva, where he arrived at the invitation of the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach.
“Let us fight so that the Mediterranean, the Aegean can become a sea of peace and not a crucible of souls where traffickers – slavers act unchecked”, noted the President.
Pavlopoulos described as historic the meeting for the refugees issue to be held in Lesvos at the end of the week with the participation of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Francis and the Archbishop of the Church of Greece Jerome.
“The refugee issue has global dimensions”, stressed the President.
Addressing the expatriates in Geneva, Pavlopoulos expressed optimism that “Greece will move forward. We will succeed because this is guaranteed by the Greek people”, he said.
The President will meet on Tuesday in Lausanne with IOC president Thomas Bach and then will visit the Olympic Museum.
