The president of Albania, Bujar Nishani declared today that the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism requires a serious commitment in order to remember that important turn of the country, inviting the government, parliament and opposition to partake in the activities scheduled by the Presidency.
He said that such activities aim at bringing to the attention the consequences of communist crime in Albania.
“This is the best period for parliament to pass a law for the opening of the files, not only for people who have worked in secret services, but also collaborators of the state regime. A bill must be drafted based on the experience of those countries that have earlier opened the files. I also demand from parliament to declare a special day for the commemoration of the day of communist crimes”, said Nishani for the media.
He added that the law on files is delayed, but that it helps in calming down the spirits of Albanians.
The president also declared that Albania lived a very harsh communist regime, because the Albanian intelligentsia was hit, sent into exile and executed.
According to him, the resistance of a non conformist group of intellectuals who faced the regime through an open debate, marked an important moment, while adding that the fundamental activity which deserves praising relates to the December students’ movement, which according to him, it remains a leader movement in overthrowing communism in Albania. /ibna/
