Olympiacos announced the signing of Eric Abidal from Monaco, with the Frenchman signing his contract after having successfully passed the medicals.
The French defender was announced by the Greek champion on Saturday night, after it successfully passed the medical examination. He now belongs to the “red-white” family and is made available to Mitchell.
The announcement of the championships is laconic and does not mention the duration of the agreement with the player, however this is a great move from Olympiacos, which adds to its roster of a great name and what’s more as a permanent transfer.
“I am very happy that I signed for Olympiakos. Thanks for the welcome and for your trust”, the Frenchman wrote in the personal account he keeps on Twitter.
The 34-year-old (11 September 1979) Eric Abidal has a rich career in the French league having played in Monaco, Lille and Lyon, while in 2007 he signed for Barcelona FC and played for six years in La Liga.
He has won three championships in Ligue 1 with Lyon, one League Cup and three Super Cups, while with Barcelona he has celebrated two Champions Leagues (2008-09 and 2010-11), a European Super Cup (2009 and 2011) and two World Club cups (2009 and 2011). He has also won four championships with the “Blaugrana” and two Copa del Rey.
Eric Abidal’s fight with cancer is well known. He had surgery in order to remove a tumor from his liver on March 17, 2011 and a liver transplant on April 10, 2012.
A month and a half after the first surgery and specifically on May 2, 2011, the French star returned to training, and on January 16, 2012 he signed a new contract with Barcelona.
Two months later it became known that Eric Abidal has to undergo a second operation, which was also successful and on May 21 he was discharged from the clinic.
Last year he played for Monaco.
