North Macedonia: Zaev asks from the Ecumenical Patriarch to recognise the Autocephaly of the “Macedonian Orthodox Church”

Zaev has sent a letter to the Patriarch of Constantinople, saying that “the Orthodox in our country deserve the independence of the Church and an Autocephalous ‘Macedonian Orthodox Church – Archdiocese of Ohrid’ with the blessing and the written decision of the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, in his letter to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Prelate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, reiterated the request he made during his visit to Constantinople, where he asked that the ‘Macedonian Orthodox Church – Archdiocese of Ohrid’ be recognized as an Autocephalous Church and become accepted in the community of the local Orthodox Churches.

“We respect what is determined by international agreements and conditions. But we ask to also be free ecclesiastical within the borders of our country and our hierarchs to serve with the hierarchs of all Orthodox churches in the world”, says Zoran Zaev in his letter to his Holiness, Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew.

The letter states that “Orthodox citizens in our country deserve the independence of the Church they have been dreaming of for a century and expect to see the ‘Macedonian Orthodox Church and the Archdiocese of Ohrid’ recognized as Autocephalous, with the blessing and written decision of the first among the Hierarchs of Christ on Earth Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople./ibna
