The Spanish Senate has unanimously voted for the NATO Accession Protocol of North Macedonia. The vote took place in the physical absence of members due to the risk of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Foreign Minister of North Macedonia Nikola Dimitrov thanked Spain for adding the issue on the agenda of the Senate’s work during such a difficult time for Europe and Spain.
After the King of Spain signs the North Macedonia Accession Protocol to NATO, it will be sent to the US State Department where the process of North Macedonia becoming the 30th member of the Euro-Atlantic Alliance will be completed.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg tweeted out that “the Spanish Senate had just ratified North Macedonia’s NATO membership. With that, all Allies have welcomed our soon-to-be 30th member. Congratulations, North Macedonia!”
US Ambassador to Skopje Kate Byrnes tweeted: “As the Spanish Senate approved the protocol of accession of North Macedonia to NATO, all 29 Allies have now welcomed our soon-to-be 30th member. Congrats to all and look forward to see the North Macedonian Flag proudly waving with those of other allies at NATO headquarters in Brussels”. /ibna
