Romanian-Belgian pairing Monica Niculescu/Yanina Wickmayer on Saturday won the final of the women’s doubles event at the 226,750-USD Washington WTA tennis tournament after defeating the Japanese double Shuko Aoyama/Risa Ozaki, 6-4, 6-3.
Niculescu/Wickmayer prevailed in one hour and 15 minutes, with a short rain break as the winning double was leading 2-1 in the first set.
The winning pairing won 12,300 US dollars and 280 WTA points, while the runner-up won 6,400 US dollars and 180 WTA points.
For Niculescu, part of team Romania in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, this was her six WTA doubles title, adding up to the titles in Budapest (2009, teamed up with Russian Alisa Kleybanova), Hobart (2012 with Romanian Irina Begu and 2014 with Klara Koukalova) and Shenzhen (2014, teamed up with Koukalova, 2016 with Vania King).
She has also played 12 more WTA doubles finals.
Wickmayer also made it to the singles final after defeating Kazakhstan’s Yulia Puntintseva.
