New Democracy on red alert for snap election
Main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis predicted this is the last summer Alexis Tsipras and Panos Kammenos will spend in power.
Speaking to party officials on Wednesday, Mitsotakis said the government’s inadequacy is leading the country to a “dead end” and the longer SYRIZA and Independent Greeks remain in power, the worse off Greece will be.
The conservative leader put his party on alert for an early election, urging them to be vigilant even during the summer months. He went on to state his conviction that New Democracy will be ready whenever the general election is held, adding that his party will win.
New Democracy will hold its convention on 14-15 December, which will be chaired by former party leader Vangelis Meimarakis.
In an attack on the government, the main opposition chief predicted that the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition will attempt to intoxicate the political environment, even going as far as inventing scandals. “We will not sink in their mud” he charged.
Mitsotakis also promised tax cuts if New Democracy comes to power. “Obviously we’ll lower the tax rates on property, something that affects all Greeks, and we’ll review the tax indices, abolishing an annual duty on professionals, when fiscal conditions allow us,” he said. Mitsotakis pointed out that he’ll offer details during an address in early September at the annual Thessaloniki trade fair.
Finally, he vowed to allow Greek nationals living abroad to vote in general elections from their place of residence, when New Democracy comes to power…. / IBNA
