The strengthening of the cooperation between Greece and Israel in energy, tourism, security, etc. was agreed at a meeting in Tel Aviv, between the Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli PM declared in a joint press conference held after the meeting that Greece is a “true friend”.
“We live in a region which is quite unstable”, he said, stressing however, that the challenges can be addressed together with greater efficiency. He added that cooperation between the two countries was delayed for some years, but it will boost both countries. Referring to the Holocaust, he reminded that Greece has proved to be against racism and anti-Semitism.
“With Israel connects us sincere friendship. We upgrade now collaboration in research-technology and tourism. The continuation of our cooperation in energy will allow for regional development, which promotes stability and peace. The wounds must be closed in our region – in Syria and Libya. In the Cyprus problem the UN decisions must be respected. We hope that talks will start again between Israelis and Palestinians for the creation of two states that would coexist in safety”, said the Greek PM.
Under the Supreme Council of Cooperation between Greece and Israel, took place bilateral meetings of homologue ministers of both countries. The cooperation agreements between the two countries concern a number of areas such as energy, maritime transport, innovation, environmental protection water technologies-, transport, tourism, security, trade partnerships.
It is noted that the atmosphere between the two leaders was very warm and for a second time the Israeli prime minister spoke in English at a joint press conference, something he does only with important leaders, such as the US president and the German chancellor.
Late on Wednesday night, Alexis Tsipras traveled to Nicosia where today will be held the first Trilateral Summit between Greek Cyprus and Israel.
