UPDATE: Cani reacts: The government doesn’t give money without knowing their destination
Tirana, November 14, 2014/Independent Balkan News Agency
In Albania, the Municipality of Tirana, which is controlled by the opposition, has filed today at the Prosecution a criminal lawsuit against the minister of Finance, Shkelqim Cani for abuse with office.
Vice mayor of Tirana, Enno Bozdo said that this lawsuit has been filed “as a result of the intentional suspension and without any reason of the payments to companies that are working for the construction of the new boulevard and river of Tirana”.
“On behalf of the Municipality of Tirana and on behalf of the interests of the citizens of Tirana, I have filed at the District Prosecution of Tirana a lawsuit for flagrant abuse of duty by the minister of Finance and general secretary of the ministry of Finance. In cooperation with each other and in violation with the law, but by applying a political order, they have blocked for a year payments to two companies that are operating and building two major projects in the city of Tirana: Tirana boulevard and Tirana river”, said Mr. Bozdo on his way out from the prosecution (photo).
He said that “the suspension of these payments through a political order, in spite of the frequent requests of the Municipality of Tirana to unblock them, has brought economic damages and penalties which are written on the contract that the Municipality of Tirana has signed. This has seriously damaged the economic interests of the citizens of Tirana, who would benefit a great deal from these two projects and on the other hand, it has left unemployed over two thousand workers who were directly employed in the construction of these two big projects. A political order which in a shameful way overlaps the law has left two thousand Albanian families without bread”.
Mr. Bozdo said that he expects the Prosecution to investigate the minister of Finance, Shkelqim Cani for suspending financing procedures. The government hasn’t issued any reactions so far about this lawsuit.
This is the first time that a state institution in Albania files a criminal lawsuit against another public institution for abuse with office and for blocking funding and public investments. /ibna/
Cani reacts: The government doesn’t give money without knowing their destination
Minister of Finance, Shkelqim Cani has reacted following the lawsuit filed by the Municipality of Tirana against him. He said that the government doesn’t give money without knowing their destination, adding that the state has enough debts to pay and caution must be shown in increasing them.
“The loan that the Municipality of Tirana has demanded, has been demanded for a while, but we don’t agree to borrow money without knowing their destination. What’s more, we will be an obstacle for them, because we have enough debts”, said minister Cani. /ibna/
