The EU head of diplomacy, Federica Mogherini declared today that SAA will back the implementation of reforms and will offer Kosovo an opportunity to come closer to Europe.

“This agreement opened a new phase in the relations between the EU and Kosovo and offers an important contribution for peace, stability and prosperity in Kosovo and in the region in general. I am waiting for the implementation of this agreement”, said Mogherini

The SAA, the implementation of which started today, is focused on the respect of the main democratic principles and the main elements which are the essence of a single EU market.

SAA will create an area which enables free trade and application of European standards in other domains, such as competition, state aid and intellectual property.

Other provisions cover political dialogue, cooperation in a large number of sectors, starting from education and employment, energy, environment, justice and domestic affairs.

This document has been negotiated in the period from October 2013 until May 2014 and was signed on 22 October 2015. The agreement was officially reached on 12 February 2016.

The European Union will continue to support Kosovo’s progress in its European path through the process of Stabilization and Association, the EU’s designed policy to boost cooperation with Western Balkans and regional cooperation.

SAA is the main component of this process. To back the necessary reforms, the EU offers financial assistances before the admission of Western Balkans and Turkey, amounting to a value of 11,7 billion euros for the period 2014-2020, out of which, 645,5 million euros are allocated for Kosovo. /ibna/
