MFA: Legality will be respected for Turks accused of attempting to overthrow the Democracy

A telephone conversation between Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was held late in the afternoon.

Foreign Minister Mr. Nikos Kotzias and Turkish counterpart Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed current developments in relation to the attempted coup in Turkey and the issue of the Turkish citizens who landed in Alexandroupolis and sought asylum.

Mr. Kotzias reiterated to his Turkish counterpart the position of the Greek government, according to which the attempt to overthrow the democratically elected Turkish government constitutes a coup and therefore a punishable action. In connection with the asylum request, Mr. Kotzias stressed that the issue will be examined on the basis of the relevant Greek and international legislation and the procedures laid down by international law will be respected; but, it will also be considered very seriously that those arrested in are accused in their country of violating the constitutional legality and attempt to overthrow the Republic.
