The famous opera by Giacomo Puccini, “Messa di Gloria”, (Mass of Glory), arrives as an absolute premiere for the Albania stage.
Part of it is the choir conducted by Dritan Lumshi and the Symphony Orchestra of the National Theater of Opera and Ballet with its conductor Olsi Qinami. The solo artists are Enricho Marchesini (bass) and two Albanians Armando Likaj (baritone), Ermal Pepa (tenor).
This opera, composed by Puccini when he was only 18, is considered as the first serious work by composer Giacomo Puccini.
Art critics say that this work is very hard technically, but it has a spiritual and musical balance that demonstrates the genius of Puccini.
With a classic structure, “Messa di Gloria” comes divided in five main materials: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Benedictus and Agnus Dei.
The choir motives are mixed with solo materials and beautiful melodies. They offer a perspective of what Puccini would later write in his operas.
The work starts with violins, which come as an internal prayer and which is then conveyed through human voice. The simple melody and the mainly vertical style of writing are inviting since the very first notes, which become more present. “Gloria” comes in an interesting form through women voices in the piano motives, to then be followed by the men’s voices as a “game” of tonalities.
Dritan Lumshi, conductor of the choir says that when he first heard “Te Deum” from the opera “Tosca”, he had been amazed, but “when I started studying Messa di Gloria, I realized where all this glory came from”.
The conductor of the orchestra of the National Theater of Opera and Ballet (TKOB), Olsi Qinami is one of the former choir members of TKOB. After studdying for several years in France, Italy, Austria and UK, Qinami returns to the stage, but in front of the orchestra as a conductor.
He says that this work has never been put to the stage in Albania and “it is not played very often in other countries of the world either”.
“There are many voices that make the interpretation of this opera difficult, but also marvelous. Attention is required with solo and choir materials, the choir is very powerful and the melodies are excellent, in order to offer the right atmosphere to the music that differs Puccini from the others”, says conductor Olsi Qinami. /balkaneu.com/
