MEPs send letter to EC president on the refugee crisis at the Greek-Turkish border

In a letter to the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the Vice-President of the Commission in charge of promoting the European way of life Margaret Schoen and EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson, 57 MEPs from four political groups (Socialists, Greens, European Left, RenewEurope), here and now, call for immediate action by European institutions in order to provide a sustainable solution to the crisis that has erupted at the Greek-Turkish border.

As the MEPs point out in their letter: “This is not a national issue that should be dealt with exclusively by the Member States, which are geographically involved”, but rather it is “a European responsibility” and “it is obvious that Greece cannot and must not handle this situation alone”.

At the same time, they call from Greece to “comply with all national, European and international standards, as well as with its obligation to give access to the legal and planned procedures concerning new arrivals and asylum procedures”, as well as the immediate “convening of an Extraordinary EU Summit”, in order to ensure the decongestion and evacuation of Greek islands and land borders, of people seeking international protection”, and “their immediate transfer to all EU Member States”. As they note, “the responsibility for the shameful violation of numerous fundamental rights at the external borders of the EU is the responsibility of all of us”./ibna
