Chinese dissident artist and activist Ai Weiwei, who lives in Germany but has been visiting Greece for the last 10 days, said he wants to stay and work in Lesvos (or at least visit often) for the construction of a “refugee memorial” in the island.

“A lot of people never managed to reach the shore, too many lost their lives in the sea” he said. “”We need a memorial.”

He already made arrangements for a studio at Lesvos and he praised the Greeks for being “so helpful and tolerant and so understanding” as far as refugees are concerned. Yet “Europe and the rest of the world have stalled in their willingness to act on the refugee crisis” he said.
