Tirana, April 10, 2015/Independent Balkan News Agency

Court of Tirana has sentenced the mayor of Kamza, Xhelal Mziu with two years in prison. At the end of the court trial, Mziu’s defense attorney, Genc Gjokutaj declared that his client was arrested at the end of the inquest and that the Court of Appeal released him.

Gjokutaj said that evidence in favor of the defendant have been submitted to the court during the trial, but that the court decided against them.

Gjokutaj demanded for the political class not to intervene with court rulings, declaring that yesterday in parliament it was said that the judge of the case has met with representatives of the majority.

Yesterday, the Democratic Party in opposition decided to rerun Xhelal Mziu for mayor of Kamza in the June 21 local government elections.

Xhelal Mziu is accused of abuse with office and abuse with the city hall’s tenders. Mziu, who has been elected as mayor of Kamza from the ranks of the Democratic Party, was handcuffed in December 2013, accused of causing eight thousand USD worth of damages to the state by not applying the equality principle in road tenders. /ibna/
