British Minister for Europe, David Lidington has declared during his visit to Skopje that the June 5 general elections must be fair and credible, while the Special Prosecution must do its job.
Lidington said this following his meetings with leaders of political parties and civil society.
“We must focus on what needs to be done, in order to make up for lost time in the aspect of EU integration. The EU’s advice is clear: political influences in the justice system do not go hand to hand with accession”, Lidington said.
In the forum with civil society, Lidington said that this country has been a leader of EU integration processes in Western Balkans, while now it has made steps backwards.
Commenting the political crisis, Lidington said that it cannot be solved by the international community.
“This can only be done by political leaders in your country. We can only assess if the political agreement has been implemented”, the British minister said.
Speaking on the issue of the name contest and the gridlock in the process of EU integration, minister Lidington said that the EU takes unanimous decisions when it comes to accepting new members.
He said that he’s hoping for the new government to successfully implement reforms and also solve the name contest with Greece. /ibna/
