Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr Nicos Kouyialis, participated in the informal Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union, held in Bratislava on 13 September 2016.
According to a press release, the meeting focused on the strengthening of the farmers` position in the food supply chain.
In this framework, Cypriot Minister asked the European Committee to proceed with concrete initiatives. Kouyialis stressed that such an initiative is the establishment of a single regulatory framework which will provide the guidelines for the acknowledgment of unfair trade practices by members of the food supply chain against the producers. He, also, added that this framework should enable the possibility of single use, where is needed, taking into consideration the particularities of the member states, especially the small ones, like Cyprus.
On the sidelines of the informal Meeting, Kouyialis had bilateral meetings with the Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner, Phil Hogan, whom he informed on the serious adverse consequences in the agriculture field in Cyprus, due to the long-lasting drought.
