On the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias met on Monday with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin.
The meeting was held in a good climate and was an opportunity for a thorough exchange of views on issues of regional and international interest, with an emphasis on the Ukrainian crisis and recent developments, as well as the Ukraine-EU relations, in the light of the visa waiver for Ukrainian citizens traveling in the Schengen area.
There were also issues of bilateral interest, including issues related to minority education in Ukraine, about which the Greek Minister asked for assurances that the rights of the Greek minority there would not be affected.
Confirming the high level of bilateral relations and finding the need for further deepening, the two Ministers agreed to meet again during Mr Klimkin’s visit to Greece in the first half of 2018.
Greek FM meets with Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit in New York
On the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias met on Monday with Arab League General Secretary Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
During the meeting, the Greek Foreign Minister referred to the close and long-standing ties of Greece’s friendship with the Arab states, while pointing to the need for further intensification of the cooperation between the European Union and the Arab League.
Issues of regional interest were also discussed in the region of the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the important role of Greece as a stabilizing factor in the region and in this context informed the Secretary General about the greek initiatives aimed at strengthening regional stability and promoting peace in the wider region through the adoption of a positive agenda.
In particular, he referred to the Rhodes Conference on Security and Stability, which will be repeated in the first half of 2018, as well as at the International Conference on Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East that will be repeated in Athens at the end of October, inviting his interlocutor to attend./IBNA
