Kosovo: The collapse of the Kurti Government raises eyebrows in the EU

The decision of the Kosovo National Assembly to withdraw its confidence from the Albin Kurti Government and trigger a political crisis in the country has garnered reactions by the EU.

EU Spokesperson for Neighborhood and Enlargement Ana Pisonero said that withdrawing confidence from Kurti puts Kosovo in a difficult political position at a trying time, amidst an unprecedented crisis caused by COVID-19.

Pisonero added that Kosovo is in need of political stability in order to deal with the coronavirus crisis. “What Kosovo needs is stability and to direct all efforts to tackle the coronavirus crisis and protect the health of the people”, she posted on Twitter.

Furthermore, Pisonero called on all Kosovo’s political leaders to act responsibly and in the interest of the people of Kosovo. “All political leaders have now to act responsibly and in the interest of the people of Kosovo. The next steps after yesterday’s vote should be taken in accordance with Kosovo’s Constitution”, Pisonero continued.

On the other hand, European Parliament rapporteur on Kosovo Viola von Cramon described the overthrow of the Pristina government as dramatic, accusing the US of “implementing a dangerous plan” in Kosovo.

“I do not know what to say. Totally irresponsible political class. Putting party and their own careers before the country. Poor people in Kosovo who hoped for reforms, rule of law, justice and a better future”, Von Cramon said, adding that it was” tragic “. /ibna
