Kosovo is a source and a destination the trafficking of people, who are exploited for sex and forced labor.
The majority of trafficking victims in Kosovo are young girls, although criminal groups in Kosovo are also forcing into prostitution women from Albania, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and other European countries.
Women and young girls are victims of sex in private homes, night clubs and massage saloons.
This is stated by the recent report of the US State Department on “Human Trafficking”.
The report says that traffickers are using more and more social media to recruit victims, while stressing that children from Kosovo and neighboring countries are forced to beg within the country.
“During the reporting period, authorities have identified children who are exploited as escorts, which are also victims of sexual traffic”, says the report.
According to the State Department, government corruption enables a suitable environment for trafficking. The report says that several police officers, workers of the Ministry of Labor and other government officials have been accused or sentenced for trafficking.
“The government of Kosovo doesn’t deliver the minimum standards in fighting traffic, however, it is making significant efforts for this. The government has licensed two centers which serve for the victims of trafficking. It has increased funds for these centers and has offered accommodation for all victims identified in 2015”, the report further says. /balkaneu.com/
