Kosovo’s Ministry of Justice has confirmed that it has send a verbal note to the Serb Ministry of Justice following the arrest of the Police Commissioner of Mitrovica, Nehat Thaci, based on the arrest warrant issued by a Serb court.

In this verbal note, the Ministry of Justice rejects any form of jurisdiction by Serbia, including the basis of the principle of universal jurisdiction, when citizens of the Republic of Kosovo are accused of offenses committed in Kosovo.

Ministry of Justice says that Police Commissioner Nehat Thaci has been unjustly arrested by Serb authorities on 29 September 2016 in the Serb territory.

Police Commissioner Thaci has been accused of committing a terrorist act in July 1999, December 1999 and January 2000 in Lipjan. The accusation dates back to 2010, but it has never been communicated to the authorities of Kosovo.

The verbal note states that Serbia has no jurisdiction on the criminal offenses allegedly committed in the territory of Kosovo.

Serbia’s jurisdiction on Kosovo no longer existed as of 10 June 1999, when Kosovo was under the UN’s administration. Since 2008, the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo have exclusive jurisdiction over the territory of Kosovo. /balkaneu.com/
