Besim Hasani, head of Kosovo’s Olympic Committee (KOC) has confirmed that Kosovo has now been accepted as a full member at the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The letter of accession says that “Kosovo is a true country of sport with a real sport structure, with 34 federations, 8 of which have been internationally accepted with a full status and 4 with a partial status”.
In October of this year, the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee had decided for a temporary recognition of KOC and had proposed for it to become a full member.
Kosovo’s Olympic Committee has been founded in 1992 and since then, it has made efforts to become part of the International Olympic Committee.
The decision will enable Kosovo’s sportsmen to participate in the Rio 2016 qualifiers and in the future editions of the Olympic games.
Outgoing minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Memli Krasniqi said that he’s happy with the decision, considering it a historical moment for sport in Kosovo. /ibna/
