Former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander-in-chief Kadri Veseli has pleaded not guilty to war crimes charges against Serbia, after appearing for the first time before the Kosovo Special Chambers in The Hague on Tuesday.
“I have read all the indictments and they allow me to say with complete certainty that I am innocent”, Veseli said. The indictment against the former leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) Kadri Veseli was confirmed on October 26, 2020. He was arrested by the Special Prosecutor’s Office on November 5, 2020 and transferred to the detention facilities of the Kosovo Special Chambers in The Hague on the same day. The indictment charges Kadri Veseli with various forms of criminal liability, war crimes and crimes against humanity under international law.
Veseli’s lawyer Ben Emmerson, who attended the first public hearing via video-call, said he would ask his client to be released pending trial. He also added that his client was not arrested as claimed by the pre-trial judge, but surrendered voluntarily after an agreement. /ibna
