In its latest report on terrorism, the US State Department has also analyzed the situation in Kosovo. According to the US State Department, in 2017, Kosovo continued to counter the growing threat posed by terrorism. The report also reveals the number of Kosovars who travelled to conflict areas to become part of terrorist organizations. “Around 403 Kosovar citizens travelled to Syria and Iraq with the aim of joining ISIS or Al-Nusrah front, while 74 of them have died. Around 133 of these people have returned, while 196 have remained in these countries in conflict.
This number also includes 40 children born to Kosovar parents in the conflict areas”, the report says. According to him, Kosovo’s authorities tried 51 suspects and 29 cases which included imams who have been arrested since 2014 on the charge of terrorism. “In 2017, authorities in Kosovo arrested five other individuals on the same charges. Authorities made another seven indictments on counts of terrorism involving 17 individuals. This year, Kosovo’s government took active steps to prepare a strategy of repatriation for its citizens who returned from conflict areas”, the report in question says.
