“The European Commission should respect democracy and is ready to cooperate with any government in Greece”, stressed in an exclusive statement to EurActiv.gr in Strasbourg the President of the European Commission, Jyrki Katainen.
The Finn senior official of the European Commission clarified in EurActiv.gr the intentions of the European Commission for the next day in Greece.
Answering to the question of whether the European Commission is ready to cooperate with any government in Athens, Katainen said: “Of course. We are a Commission of 28 Member States and should respect the democratic system. Therefore, we are ready to work with any who respects the fundamental rights and values of the EU”, he noted.
“I am pleased that Mr. Katainen proclaims respect for democracy and fundamental rights. He needs to prove this respect in practice, with the revision of the brutal austerity policies that are leveling social rights, despite the fact that these are guaranteed in theory, both by the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Social Charter”, commented on EurActiv SYRIZA MEP, Kostas Chrysogonos.
“This is very positive. This should be the role of the European Commission, provided of course the democratically elected government recognises a continuum in terms of the European strategy and European obligations of the country”, commented in EurActiv.gr New Democracy MP, Giorgos Kyrtzos.
