The president of the Independent Greeks Panos Kammenos made serious accusations on the role of former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, during a press interview on 80th TIF.
“I do not exclude the fact that Mr. Varoufakis played a suspicious role. And I will tell you why I do not rule it out. When we were at a Cabinet meeting in the early days of the formation of the government and were designing the negotiation, I asked him many times:
What if we reach a dead end, shouldn’t we prepare another solution? He always avoided to answer regarding the other solution. We were the ones who were rushing to find the alternate financing solutions for the country.
Mr. Varoufakis then, based on game theory, was telling us that 50% they will back immediately and 50% later. However, he told us at one time, you know Schaeuble called me in private and told me, would you like to exit the European Union and give you a great compensation and a cancellation of debt?
When I heard that I thought Varoufakis was joking. But, ultimately, it seems that he had convinced himself that this would be a solution. Who stood to gain from this?
The first one who stood to gain was Schauble and Germany. The second were the countries of the European North. But let’s not forget that certain funds in the US, which had previously employed Mr. Varoufakis, also stood to gain , “he said.
Kammenos stressed that the latest Agreement is not a Memorandum, but “the final Agreement for leaving Memoranda”.
“I am good with my conscience. We avoided a national disaster. I want my children to be proud of me. And even if we are not vindicated by our citizens, we will be vindicated by our history and the interests of the nation”, he said.
