Judo player from Kosovo, Majlinda Kelmendi has been nominated as the Sportswoman of the Year in Laureus World Sports Awards, thus becoming the only Albanian part of the most famous sports people such as Roger Federer, Pele, Michael Phelps, Ronaldo, Michael Schumacher, Zinedine Zidane, etc.

This is another success for Majlinda Kelmendi, who during the 6 years of Kosovo’s independence, she has managed to honor her flag in the world.

Kelmendi’s nomination is expected to be made official on February 26 in a special ceremony which will be held in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

The nominations will be announced by World Cup Winner with France, Marcel Desailly, former Totenham’s manager, Andre Villas Boas and 5 times world champion in cycling, Mick Doohan.

Some of them who have been nominated for this prize before are: Roger Federer, Alex Ferguson, Lewis Hamilton, Pele, Michael Phelps, Ronaldo, Micheael Schumacher, Serena Williams, Zinedine Zidane, Novak Djokovic, etc.

Special guests throughout these years were King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince Albert of Monaco, David and Victoria Beckham and actors Sean Connery, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Morgan Freeman, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey.

This title is currently held by British athlete, Jessica Ennis.

Majlinda Kelmendi, 22 years of age, won the gold medal in the World Judo Championship in Rio de Janeiro. After defeating the Brazilian Erika Miranda in the 52 kg category, she became the first Kosovar who achieved such classification in judo. Kelmendi champion of the world in the 52 kg category. /ibna/
