In July 2018, Sofia sent requests to the U.S., Portugal, France, Germany, Israel, Italy and Sweden so that they would make proposals for the supply “of up to 16 new or used multipurpose fighter aircraft” seenews.com reports.
On Monday, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said that out of the seven countries approached by Bulgaria, three, of them, Italy, the States and Sweden had positively responded to the request.
According to the competent ministry, “The US has offered to supply new F-16 or F-18 jets, Sweden – new Gripen fighters, while Italy has offered used Eurofighter aircraft.”
Moreover, the Bulgarian Defence ministry noted that “A working group appointed by the prime minister is expected to complete assessment of the offers by October 19, although the deadline may be extended. Upon completion of the assessment, a second working group also appointed by the prime minister will hold talks with the bidders for improving the terms of the offers.”
As far as the U.S. is concerned, Bulgaria was asking for new or used F-16 and F/A-18 Super Hornet jets, Dassault Rafale in the same condition from France, Gripen C/D from Sweden, Germany’s new Eurofighter 3 Tranche jets, Italy’s used Eurofighter Tranche 1 fighter jets as well as used F-16 from Portugal and Israel, says seenews.com…. / IBNA
