The head of the Association for Research, Analyses and Development in FYROM, Vane Cvetanov says that the European Union is investigating three cases concerning the abuse of IPA pre accession funds.

After the accusations addressed by the opposition for the abuse of IPA funds in the construction of the highway linking Demir Kapi-Smokvica, Cvetanov says that the European Office against Fraud, started this April to investigate the way FYROM has spent IPA funds.

“There are world level consulting firms which register off-shore companies, invoices and fictitious companies. The money can come out from the account or in cash”, said Cvetanov, who four years ago was the head of the Financial Intelligence Agency in FYROM.

Public Prosecution in FYROM has also started a probe on the abuse of IPA funds. The investigation focuses on several agricultural plants which have been supplied with agricultural equipment. According to Prosecution, 200.000 euros have been misused in this case.

A bill was passed in 2010 against the misuse of EU funds. According to the Criminal Code, any individual who will misuse EU money, will be sentenced from 6 months to 5 years in prison.

Meanwhile, companies which will abuse with IPA funds will be fined. /
