Former football player Gheorghe Popescu is one step closer to being released from jail. A court in Bucharest today ruled that Popescu is eligible for conditional release, having spent half of a three years sentence and having had an impeccable behavior. The former captain of FC Barcelona and Romania’s national football team was convicted on March 2014 at the end of a very public trial where he was accused of money laundering following the transfers of several players.
Today, magistrates approved a request for Popescu’s release, sent by the administration of Jilava penitentiary, where Popescu is serving his time.
The decision does not mean that the former footballer will be released immediately. Prosecutors moved against the ruling, therefore the upper instance, Bucharest Courthouse, will have the final saying in this case.
