Population of Albania grows for the first time after 16 years. Such fact has been confirmed by the latest statistics of the Institute of Statistics.
“On 1 January 2017, population of Albania was 2.88 million, registering an increase for the first time since 2001. Compared to a year ago, the population grew by 1 thousand residents. On 1 January 2017, population of Albania was estimated to be 2.876.591 residents as opposed to 2.875.592 residents on 1 January 2016”, INSTAT reports.
INSTAT also adds that during 2016, the number of newly born babies was 32 thousand, while the number of people who died was 21 thousand.
Experts of the Institute of Statistics explain that the number of births continues to exceed the number of deaths, although their difference is narrowing down as the years go by. This difference in 2016 was around 11 thousand.
“On the other hand, although net migration continues to remain negative, it shrank by 54% compared to last year, as a result of the reduction in the number of emigrants from 41 thousand to 33 thousand and the increase in the number of people moving within the country from 21 thousand to 23 thousand during 2015-2016. Elderly people in Albania represent from one year to another a growing tendency. Age group 60-79 accounted on 1 January 2001 10% of the population, while on 1 January 2017, this age group accounted for around 17% of the population”, INSTAT reports among others. /balkaneu.com/
