IBNA/exclusive: “We want cooperation with EU and Greece in the refugee problem”, says the Turkish ambassador to Greece

“Returns don’t work as planned”

We spoke with the Turkish ambassador to Athens, Mr. Burak Özügergin, after his meeting with the Greek Foreign Minister on the refugee problem. The Turkish ambassador told us his country’s views on this issue and emphasized Turkey’s commitment to the agreement it has signed with the EU on the refugee issue.

At the same time, he emphasized his country’s desire for cooperation with Greece on the matter.

Specifically, Mr. Ozugergin states:

“There is no differentiation in our commitment to the March 18th agreement and we expect the same commitment and compliance from the EU.

The returns mechanism, which is the essence of the agreement, does not work as designed. There has been some increase lately, but the pressure we receive is more than the pressure reflected here.

We attach importance to cooperation with Greece.

Instead of counting arrivals alone, we hope to create a climate of strategic cooperation and consultation with the EU on the problems that surround us”./ibna
