Although some analysts doubted that the 2016 budget would pass without “losses” (it was expected that some MPs of the coalition would not support it), it finally got the approval of 153 MPs, that is with all the votes of SYRIZA and ANEL coalition. MP Nikos Nikolopoulos who was elected with ANEL but became independent 20 days ago and was ousted by his party, was absent –so he didn’t support, nor voted against the budget
The vote concluded late, at around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday following five days of debate
Still, government faces another “test” later on December, because of the bill on social security. This bill is very unpopular and Tsipras wants to ensure its approval even if some of the coalition MPs disagree –so he is trying to ensure MPs from other parties will support it.
