Greece: SYRIZA calls on Gov’t to provide immediate update on the situation in Evros

With a joint statement by the heads of the parliamentary group’s National Defense and Foreign Affairs Department, Thodoris Dritsas and Giorgos Katrougalos respectively, SYRIZA is calling on the government to immediately provide updates on the events that took place in Evros.

“The government must immediately inform the political parties regarding Turkey’s arbitrary, aggressive actions that have been going on for two days in the border area of Evros and around the initiatives it is planning on taking”, the SYRIZA chiefs pen in their statement.

They go on to cite the statements of Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias, who downplayed the issue yesterday, emphasizing that he was not intending to exacerbate tensions on an issue that could be resolved by a joint committee.

Yet the two SYRIZA members wonder, “Does he think it was not Turkey that created the tension? Does he think that the competent committee should have been convened before the Military Geographical Service took action in the area? What is the position of the Ministry of Defense on this issue?”

They conclude their statement by underlining that “These issues require knowledge, composure, prudence and determination. The lack of strategy and the diplomatic vacuum that is emerging in relation to Turkey poses obvious risks to the country”. /ibna
