Greece: Mitsotakis welcomes the Commission’s proposal as a solid starting point

“Greece fully supports the Commission’s proposal; this is a very good starting point, it is not possible to go below the level of this proposal”, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said during a meeting of the European Council, in which the predominant issue was the character and the amount from the Recovery Fund.

“We have an appointment with history. Speaking as a country that experienced a recession of 9.1% in 2011, this kind of economic situation is particularly painful, leading to social unrest and rising populism. We should all be well aware of what we will face if our response does not rise to the occasion in terms of quantity and speed. Greece fully supports the Commission’s proposal; this is a very good starting point, we cannot go below the level of this proposal”, the Greek PM stressed.

The Prime Minister insisted on maintaining the level of the total amount and the ratio of grants-loans, as well as not to change the distribution key. “Markets have discounted the amount of intervention and anything different would create a very serious problem”, he said.

Referring to the Multiannual Financial Framework, Kyriakos Mitsotakis pointed out the important role of cohesion policies, especially in the midst of a crisis.

Finally, he referred to the issue of Turkish provocationσ, saying that “it is paradoxical to discuss sanctions against Russia for Ukraine and not to discuss the violation of the sovereign rights of EU Member States such as Greece and Cyprus”. He called for the issue to be discussed at the July Summit, which will be held in vivo in Brussels. /ibna
