Residents of the commune of Butel in Skopje have protested today in front of the Ministry of Interior in order to demand more safety conditions for the continuation of works for the erection of a giant cross in this commune.
The protesters have been led by the mayor of Butel, Petre Latinovski. He said that the ministry of Interior must guarantee the necessary conditions for the works to start and for those people who demolished the foundations of the cross during last week’s protest to be brought before justice. This protest against the cross organized last week was led by the Albanian party, BDI. But this party withdrew from the protest saying that there has been a deal that the cross will not be erected.
But, Latinovski said that the decision will not be annulled.
“I would like to reject any rumors about the annulment of the decision to erect the cross in the commune of Butel. For this, it is the initiator of the Macedonian World Congress who must submit such request to make any changes”, Latinovski said.
Macedonian residents of Butel said that they will protest on a daily basis.
The erection of this cross has sparked political tension between VMRO-DPMNE and BDI, which are part of a governing coalition, but also in coalition in the city of Skopje and commune of Butel. /ibna/
