The international community has demanded the new government in Skopje to fight corruption, a phenomenon which has spread in all the country’s institutions.
Several days ago, the US ambassador to Skopje, Jess Baily said that the members of the State Election Commission have benefited extra wages and bonuses amounting to several thousand euros, in violation of the law.
“Corruption is like a cancer in society and the battle against this phenomenon should not remain on paper, but in practice”, ambassador Baily said.
Leaders of political parties in power, mayors and representatives of civil society have signed a joint declaration for the fight against corruption, drafted by the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights.
“I pledge that there will be zero tolerance against corruption within the government and my party. Corruption and inequality lead to uncertainty and injustice in society”, said Pm Zoran Zaev.
The mayor of Gostivar, Arben Taravari says that local government will also lead a tough fight against corruption.
“We are committed to fight corruption. This is not only a pledge, but it will be followed by concrete action”, Taravari said. /balkaneu.com/
