Albania is ranked in the list of safe countries of origin in the decision for refugees of the State Council in France. Based on the code for the Entry and Stay of Foreign Nationals and asylum, a country is considered safe if it guarantees the principles of freedom, democracy, rule of law and basic human rights and liberties.

The State Council in France has considered Albania as a country with democratic institutions. The Council says that measures have been taken in fight against corruption and reforms have been undertaken in the domain of criminal and civil law.

Under these circumstances, France will no longer accept asylum seekers from Albania. The French State Council considered the decision taken by the refugee office, where Albania is considered to be a safe country of origin, as a “fair one”.

This means that no asylum demands will be accepted from Albanian nationals by French authorities if the motivation is lack of democracy and the fact that human rights are not respected in their country.

A while ago, German authorities too said that they will not accept any asylum demands from the West Balkan countries, including Albania, considering these countries as safe. The same policy will also be followed by other EU member countries.

The latest statistics show that the number of Albanian asylum seekers in the EU member countries for the first half of 2014 doubled compared to the same period a year ago. Serbia leads the list of asylum seekers from the Balkan. /ibna/
