Presidency Commissioner Fotis Fotiou represented the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades at the World Youth Forum held in Sharm El Sheikh on December 14-16, 2019.
Fotis Fotiou attended the inaugural session of the Forum and participated in a roundtable discussion chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.
The roundtable focused on opportunities for cooperation and challenges in the Mediterranean region.
In his speech, Commissioner Fotiou highlighted the need for cooperation to be broadened at a tripartite and regional level, in the context of a joint effort to address the challenges and risks related to tackling terrorism, crisis management, migration and climate change.
He also noted that, in order for stability, peace, security and prosperity in the region to be preserved, the concepts of sovereignty, international and maritime law and human rights must be respected. He also suggested closer cooperation between the EU, the Eastern Mediterranean countries and the Arab world, while also referring to the successful Diaspora program between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.
On the occasion of the Forum, the Presidency Commissioner had a meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabila Makram, with whom they discussed the next steps of bilateral cooperation, as well as issues related to the trilateral meeting of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt scheduled to be held on 19 December at the level of Ministers of Diaspora.
Besides, Fotis Fotiou held a tripartite meeting as well, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and the Deputy Minister of Education of Greece, Sofia Zacharaki, in the presence of the youth representatives of the three countries. /ibna
