Foreign Ministry of Cyprus: The “consulate” constitutes a serious secessionist move

By Michalis Michael

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus condemns Turkey’s stated intention to open a “Consulate General” of the country in Famagusta, noting that this behavior is indicative of an effort by Turkey aimed at provoking new unacceptable fait accompli and to undermine the possibility of a relaunch of the process for the Cyprus issue in the framework of the UN Secretary General’s Good Services mission.

At the same time, it is underlined that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to take decisive action against Turkey’s provocative actions, taking all appropriate measures to prevent them, and to work towards the success of the ongoing efforts to create the conditions necessary for the resumption of talks from where they stopped at Crans Montana.

The above intention (to open a “consulate”) is, according to the Foreign Minister, another very serious secession act – in breach of relevant UN resolutions, in particular Security Council Resolution 550, which, among other things, “condemns all secessionist actions, including the alleged exchange of ambassadors between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, declares them illegitimate and invalid and calls for their immediate recall” – which is added to the provocative actions of the last period on the part of Turkey and “officials” of the occupation regime in relation to Famagusta and more./ibna
