U.S. player Danielle Collins was defeated by Maria Sakkari whose exquisite performance has brought her to the first WTA final of her career, at the San Jose Open, winning it at 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday.
Xinhua wrote that “Sakkari’s impressive run this week, including a stunner over Venus Williams, has guaranteed her a spot back into the top 40 in the world rankings”, with the Greek player commenting after her victory: “I think it’s part of my character and the way I grew up playing. I like drama. When things get tighter, I’m more used to it. It’s in my character.”
Her rival, said, “I think at 4-1 in the second she started really stepping up to the baseline and putting her foot on the gas. It helped her get back in her rhythm and playing more aggressive. It threw me off a little bit. She played some really great tennis.”
After persevering past Venus Williams and Danielle Collins in two consecutive wins, on Friday and Saturday respectively, the 23-year-old Greek who has gloriously secured her spot in the final at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, will now face Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu (who beat Elise Mertens from Belgium).
Her sole aim is to lift the San Jose trophy…. / IBNA
