The passengers’ ferry travelling from Bari to Durres was engulfed in the early hours of this morning by fire, around seven miles from the Italian port.
The incident took place in the “Francesca” ferry belonging to Adria Ferries.
The fire emerged in the ferry engine’s turbines. Below, IBNA brings you the film footage from the event filed by the Italian police.
Helicopters and ships have been sent to the scene to hold the situation under control.
Official sources inform that there are no wounded people, but considerable material damages.
Around 300 passengers were on the board of the ship, including the crew, which was in panic due to the ship stopping in the middle of the sea.
Authorities said that on board, the ship had 131 Albanian passengers, 50 Italians, 22 passengers belonging to other nationalities and 54 crew members and 71 vehicles.
In the morning, the ferry returned to the port of Bari and the passengers and vehicles will continue their journey with another vehicle.
Authorities said that they are investigating the causes of the fire that caused panic among passengers and crew. /ibna/
