FYROM may have a population of about 1.8 million people and this figure was issued by the Health Insurance Fund.
This figure may be close to the number of the current population, as this fund has almost all the population of the country registered in it. According to the data issued by the fund, in December of 2012, 1.744.237 people were registered for health services and this figure may be close to the number of current population in the country.
The causes of the drastic fall of population relates to the departure of people toward EU countries for purposes of asylum or work after the lifting of the visa regime.
According to the census carried out in 2002, 2.022.547 people live in FYROM, out of which 65% are Macedonians, 25.17% are Albanians, 3.85% are Turkish, 2.66% are Roma, 1.78% are Serbs and other minorities. The scheduled census of the population was not carried out last year due to the disagreements between the Macedonian and Albanian members of the State Commission of Registration in regards to the process and the method of registration. /ibna/
